Discipleship

In many churches across America, the Great commission in Matthew
28: 18 – 20 is used to challenge God’s people in the
area of soul-winning. However, care should be taken to recognize
that “soul-winning” is merely the first step in the
commission. There are 4 key thoughts in the Great Commission. They
are to GO, WIN, BAPTIZE and DISCIPLE. Biblical discipleship is the
means that God has given His church to reach the world and is a
necessary outgrowth of biblical evangelism.
Formal discipleship does not take the place of preaching. However,
it is an important tool in helping mature and ground believers in
the Word of God. The new convert is to be taught and nurtured in
his faith by a more mature Christian. If we Christians will not
capture the burden for discipleship or continue to neglect our
responsibility to the next generation, we will continue to be
carnal, struggling Christians in our churches. As mature
Christians, we have an obligation to teach others what we have
learned.
We praise God for the discipleship materials of Rev. John Honeycutt
and of the Reformers’ Unanimous International. Currently, we
are on the process of reorganizing the partnership since we have
Christian who have moved on as Disciplers and since we have seen
God add new believers to the fold. Each partnership can meet
anytime throughout the week for one full hour. Each meeting is
consisted of prayer, sharing, fellowship and Bible study. More
importantly, each partnership seeks to develop a stronger
relationship and a more faithful walk with Christ.
It is vital that as a church, we remember all of the Great
commissions is applicable to our ministries, including
discipleship. It is only by God’s grace as we work closely
with others that we can permanently succeed. Let us remember that
discipleship is a vital part of our calling to fulfill the Great
commission.
By training new disciples, we are carrying Christ’s command
to reach the world, from the biblical standpoint. Discipleship is
part of the multiplication process found in II Timothy 2:2
“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many
witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able
to teach others also.”
